The master in the art of living makes little distin-ction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he's always doing both. - James Michener

1.
Why We Work What determines the way we seek to allocate those needs through our work? The first influence that comes to mind is family examples. What have you observed about your parents' view of work? In my case, I witnessed a strong emphasis on contribution to the world through paid and non-paid service to others. As we mature and create our own personal system of values, we add to our vision of how we want our own work to look. New attitudes and intentions grow from our own experience and reinforcement from our external world. Our peers, colleagues, friends, and surrounding community supply messages that help us to define "work" in a way that is meaningful to us. Look at your current work. If you were to place percentages on how that work plays out for you, what would it be? Here is an example:
Set up a formula that would satisfy you. Then plot an estimate of your current percentages. Is this the proportion you want? We can't always expect work to provide precisely what we would prefer. Can you fulfill those needs elsewhere? If that is the case, you can fill in the blanks. Look for a hobby, community service, school activity, civic group, religious group, or other outlet to help you balance your equation. Recognizing what is right for you is the first step. Taking action from there will add to your contentment and satisfaction. Enjoy the journey! |
