Life in New Mexico
As I have been looking at the various articles and classes I have assembled, I finally put my finger on what I could call a common theme, Career Life Connections. So, this issue begins a series of articles that focus on using and enjoying the connections that support our lives and our life work.

What's in this issue?

  1. Lead Article - Connecting in a Mentor Relationship

  2. Class Schedule

  3. Information on Coaching Services

  4. Humor from Resumes

  5. Resources

1. Connecting in a Mentoring Relationship

There are two ways of spreading light - to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.

- Edith Wharton, Vesalius in Zante

To lead off my series of articles about career life connections, I chose to interview one of my mentors, Jerry Bukiewicz, owner of The Bukiewicz Organization (http://bukiewicz.org). When I asked Jerry what prompted him to become a mentor, his response was an interesting one.

"I don't think this was ever a conscious decision on my part. A big part of what drew me to the consulting profession is the enjoyment I get from helping others be successful and grow. The "others" could just as easily be a client, a colleague or a protégé. When I started consulting, I thought all consultants used a "capacity building" approach; working to leave expertise behind with those involved in the project. I soon found that was certainly not the case. Even with those who profess a collaborative process, most often take an expert role which inevitably leads to an "us/them" mentality. I vowed from the very beginning to practice what I preach in this area. So my goal has always been to give away as much of what I know as I possibly can."

I was very fortunate to benefit from Jerry's attitude about sharing. He was an empowering guide for me as I learned about consulting. Because he served as my promoter as well, I gained connections and work that might not have come my way without his help. He might be surprised that I still remember his wise words and his manner of working with people. One lesson that I have taken from observing and working with Jerry and other mentors is to find my own signature way of leading. Each of us can be inspired by an effective mentor and can take in the essence of their brilliance without imitating them exactly. Then we translate that into our own style to add even more excellence to our chosen work. And just think what happens when we become mentors ourselves and the process multiplies many times!

Take some time to think of your own mentors and what you have gained from them. While you are thinking of this, you might want to reach out and thank them. Stay connected!

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

- Buddha
