Life in New Mexico
We are
enjoying the beauties of spring here with sunny skies and warm
temperatures, flowers and blooming trees (Achoo!), and later gorgeous
sunsets. My lovely cat Sabrina loves basking in the sunshine and
munching on leaves and grass. Life is good. Like they sing in the
Shaker hymn:
"And when
we find ourselves in the place just right, 'twill be in the valley of
love and delight."

Handling Your Power
|
|
As we look
ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others.
- Bill Gates |
|
|
We all have
different kinds of power. Some choose to hoard it, thinking that is
the best and safest way to handle it. I am sure you can think of
people who do this. What are their lives like? If you watch closely,
you may see a lifestyle that is not attractive, healthy, or enjoyable.
Power is
influence. One way to view our power is the ability and potential to
radiate whatever influence we have so that it multiplies and grows
substantially. And wouldn't it be nice if that required only a small
amount of effort on our part?
The key lies
in empowering and working with others to achieve a common goal.
To use a
farming metaphor, you can choose to water your field all by yourself
or you can share that responsibility. Picture two different farmers.
One of them uses a small watering can and walks from one end of the
field to the other from dawn to dusk. The next morning, she gets up
and does the same thing again. There isn't much time for anything
else and only so much energy for each day.
The second
farmer sets up a sophisticated irrigation system, flips the switch,
and goes off to do other things. Those other activities might include
setting up an interview with a radio station to talk about the health
benefits of buying and eating fresh produce grown locally, writing an
article for newspaper or magazine publication, meeting with others to
gain knowledge and support, and lining up vendors for the produce she
grows. By getting out and relating to others, this person can also
have a team of hired hands who handle specific chores. If she has
hired them wisely, she has chosen people who can do these tasks more
efficiently and effectively than she can so that she can be confident
and relax about the operation of her farm. This farmer may even have
a social life and time for family!
Now that you
have the farmer metaphor to consider, how might you translate this
into a meaningful model for your life? I am curious to see what you
may create around this theme. Please send me your stories. And choose
the farmer you want to emulate.
If you aren't
confident enough to give away power, then you are not very powerful.
|
You have to
enable and empower people to make decisions independent of you. As
I've learned, each person on a team is an extension of your
leadership; if they feel empowered by you they will magnify your
power to lead.

New
Master Mind Groups
Are you in a
Master Mind group? I am collecting interested (and interesting)
people who want to join a new Master Mind group. Specifically, I have
a writer/coach and a leadership consultant who are looking for a
couple more people to join them in a Master Mind Group. They would
like to meet regularly by phone, at least bi-weekly or monthly. Would
you like to join their group?

about Master Mind groups and how you can benefit by belonging,

Humor from Resumes
My sister sent
