Life
in New Mexico
What a
beautiful summer we are having! I have discovered where the most
impressive gardens are, and I have even timed my evening walks to see
the Sandia Mountains when the setting sun brings out their watermelon
color glow. Sandia means watermelon in Spanish, and it is a
magnificent sight!

Life in the Present
|
Only one
person in a thousand knows the trick of really living in the present.
Most of us
spend fifty-nine minutes an hour living in the past, with regret for
lost joys or shame for things badly done . . . or in a future which
we either long for or dread. There is only one minute in which you
are alive, this minute, here and now.
-Storm Jameson |
|
Where is your
attention right now? Are you awake and aware of your surroundings?
I hope this
reminder brings you squarely into the present. Although it is good to
remember favorite events from our past and to be excited about what
might happen for us in the future, real joy comes in the journey.
There is a
wonderful quote of Thomas J. Leonard that goes, "Make the
present incredibly wonderful, and the future will take care of itself."
Our daily
lives offer many opportunities for peak experiences, moments when we
are feeling our happiest and strongest. This idea is explored
thoroughly in "Flow: the Psychology of Optimal
Experience" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. In it, the
author defines flow and offers examples of people achieving flow.
Contrary to popular belief, that optimal feeling does not happen when
we are at leisure (perhaps reminiscing about the past or dreaming of
the future). It is most likely in the midst of intense effort either
at work or play.
When can you
appreciate these moments?
-
You take a
smart risk
- You learn
something new
- You are
engaged in stimulating discussion
- You make a discovery
- You begin
to understand
- You put
something together mentally or physically
- In some
way, you go farther or faster
When we are in
the moment, time stands still for us. We appreciate what is around us
and whatever is happening to add to our happiness. We feel in control
of our actions, and there is a deep sense of exhilaration and enjoyment.
Wow! That
sounds great! How can I have that?
Pay attention.
Take time during every day to notice what you appreciate. As you
reach your goals or the milestones toward them, congratulate yourself
and let the satisfied feeling sink in. Don't travel to your desired
destination wearing blinders! Admire the scenery that your daily
experiences offer you, whether that scenery is physical or a mental
image and feeling. When you are faced with a challenge, think of how
you can learn and become stronger by facing it squarely.
Savoring the
moment is the most pleasant feeling!

are making such thorough preparation for
rainy days
that they aren't enjoying today's sunshine.

what is happening to inspire your feeling. |

Career Tip - Cover Letter in a Nutshell
Wouldn't it be
great if cover letters wrote themselves? Well, don't hold your
breath. That won't happen soon. Fortunately, there are plenty of
books with sample letters you can use to guide you. These books offer
power phrases and other language you can emulate, and I do recommend
that you use them for reference. However, before you resort to
copying, please pause to sketch out your basic outline and address
your unique situation.
Here are
essential elements for a cover letter no matter how you finesse the
language. Consider each numbered item as the purpose of a paragraph.
-
I'm interested
in the job.
- Here are
what I see as your needs.
- Here is
how I can help with those needs and my credentials (briefly!) to show
that I can.
- Let's
talk. Here is how to reach me.
- Thanks for
your consideration.
There are a
number of good books on this topic that you can order directly from
my website. Please check it out!

Just
for Fun
My brother
sent me the following. Every year, English teachers from across the
country can submit their collections of actual analogies and
metaphors found in high school essays. These excerpts are published
each year to the amusement of teachers across the country. Here
are last year's winners.
-
Her face was a
perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed
by a Thigh Master.
- His
thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like
underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.
- He spoke
with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who
went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those
boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking
at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse
without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.
- She grew
on him like she was a colony of E. Coli, and he was room-temperature
Canadian beef.
- She had a
deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before
it throws up.
- Her
vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.
- He was as
tall as a six-foot, three-inch tree.
- The
revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of
his wife's infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a
formerly surcharge-free ATM machine.
