Life
in New Mexico
Although I
love the warm dry climate here, I am also learning to appreciate rain.
We have had so little precipitation during the spring that any
rainfall causes great excitement! As I write this, we have had rain
two days in a row and may get more today. Then the sun will be back,
shining brightly. Ah - it is enchantment!

The Big Shift by Eva Gregory
You've got big
dreams. Ideas that are going to take your life in a complete
one-eighty degree turn, right? Like creating better balance between
work and home, creating more organization, or finding the perfect
mate. You're raring to go except for one thing - how to get started.
Such a life-altering goal is going to require some major serious
action, right? Or will it? Somewhere along the line the mind seems to
directly infer that big is to big, as small is to small and that is
just erroneous when it comes to goals. Take as an example the person
who wants to de-clutter a home. A huge undertaking - yes. While going
through the house and pitching everything that is not a dire
necessity is an option, creating systems for various
items/rooms/house occupants is a much smaller task which will yield
far better long-term results. Why? In the second scenario the goal,
the action, and commitment to the goal were all involved, elements
required to produce results. A monumental shift does not require a
monumental action.
The
Success Tool for the Big Shift
-
Change your
thoughts regarding your anticipated outcome. If you think that
your project is too big for you to accomplish, it's going to be. If
it does seem too monumental, simply break it down into two or more
smaller tasks that can be managed more effectively. How you perceive
it, so shall it be.
-
Get clear
about the action and your plan of attack. Ever have to prepare a
meal at the last minute when you're not sure if you have all of the
ingredients, the pots and pans are all dirty in the sink, and you
have a deadline of less than thirty minutes? Well that's what a
poorly planned goal plays out like. Wouldn't a hastily prepared to-do
list, a recipe card, or even a handy phone book with circled ads for
good quick take-out make things much easier? Why spend the majority
of your time running around willy nilly? You already possess the best
planning tool around - your mind. Use it to specifically determine
what you want to accomplish and then plan it all out in detail.
Determine which small quick approaches can be taken to get you
started down the right path. The more details the better because it
allows you to see the outcome. Forget seeing is believing! Seeing is ACHIEVING.
-
Commit to it.
Write it down and start living your life "as if". As if
it's already come to be. Think about how much more confident and at
ease you are when you have experience doing a task, job skill, or
project. Think of this as a dress rehearsal for your success. The
better you know your lines (your actions), and your blocking (your
plan of attack), the smoother the performance will be. You owe it to
your audience (yourself) to be as prepared as possible-always.
A few small
changes are often all that are required to yield huge returns. In
cases where there are several steps, small changes are basically
catalysts that create chain reactions that result in the monumental
shift that you are looking for. The Big Shift is just the way to
ramp-up your successful approach to change, and actually make it so.
It's so much more about starting from within with your thoughts,
since thoughts are the preschool for actions. Just remember the big
shift isn't all about big action - just some action.

Career Tip - Assertive Job Proposals
I take this
opportunity to recommend a book with an assertive approach to the job
search process. Many authors tell you how to find jobs that are
already posted in some way through the media or through an
organization's website. However, I suggest that you read "Through
the Brick Wall" by Kate Wendleton
to go beyond this method and get creative! In the book, she describes
how you can analyze what is advertised, do your research on the
company's needs, and design a way to fit your skills with those needs.
That might mean creating a new position that addresses ways to
correct problems and capitalize on the organization's strengths.
Kate Wendleton
offers examples of job seekers who have done just that, so you can
gain practical tips to write your own proposal. This new position
could be a much more appropriate job for you and one that is also
more lucrative!
Gone are the
days when you signed on with one employer and worked in that job
until retirement. Your best bet for securing your career future is to
focus on articulating who you are and what skills you bring to job
negotiations.
Prepare for
every interview with the mindset that you are a business owner. This
is true. You are the CEO of You, Incorporated.
There are a
number of good books on this topic that you can order directly from
