1. Canning Your "Can'ts"

"Magic is believing in yourself.
If you can do that,
you can make anything happen."

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Although I do not have any first-hand experience with the industry, several members of my family have worked at one time for a canning factory of a major soup company. They have also canned vegetables and fruits from their gardens. We view canning as a very good thing (m-m-good).

Cans are something we can use and then recycle. "Can'ts", however, are another story. Nobody wants your old "can'ts!" You have to find a way to get rid of them yourself. Fortunately, it is possible to can those can'ts by reframing and looking for how you can proceed positively. Here are examples:

  • From "I can't afford it" to "How can I afford it?"

  • From "I can't because I don't have the right degree" to "How can I do it without the degree?" or "How can I earn that degree?"

To begin, you need to adjust your thinking and your language slightly if you really want to be, do, or have a certain thing. How can you make the change?

Choose to earn a BS in Excuses - or - add two different letters to "I can't" and make it "I can try." Then plot out a plan on how you can and start taking action!

"The worst thing you can do is not to try, to be aware of what one wants and not give in to it, to spend years in silent hurt wondering if something could have materialized - and never knowing."

- David Viscott

2. Coaching Assignment

a)

What is a can't that has been holding you back? Write a statement that begins, "I can't . . . "

b)

Now write a question to match your statement by beginning, "How can I . . .?"

c)

Brainstorm a list of possible actions. Make it a long list and keep writing without judging and dismissing any of those ideas.

d)

Ask someone else for ideas to add to your brainstorm.

e)

Do some research for more ideas. Use books, the Internet, and other resources.

f)

Choose a plausible first action from your list. Either put it on your calendar or do it right away!

g)

Congratulate yourself for the magic you are performing.

3. Career Tip - The Right Moves

Sometimes going toward the job you want means moving away from it first. I offer the example of my brother Jim (an athlete and chess player) who has recently acquired a desired position through a series of strategic moves.

  • Completed degree and immediately started pursuing an advanced degree in a carefully chosen program that aligned with his career goal

  • Finished advanced degree and gained new experience by working in another part of the country

  • Returned to area and took on a high-profile assignment which translated into further employment, adding to his experience and credentials

  • Got into organization where he wanted to work at a lower level position

  • Applied and handily won the post he sought

You are probably thinking that this looks too easy. While this was happening, the moves were not as smooth as they appear in this list. There were even some time outs. But Jim persisted and kept his focus. He concentrated on playing the game well, and it paid! Who knows? Some similar moves may lead you to success as well.
