1. Who Do You Trust?

To pursue success effectively, you must build supportive relationships that will help you work toward your goals. To build those relationships, you need to trust others: and to earn their trust, you in turn must be trustworthy."

 - Stedman Graham

From 1957 to 1962 a popular game show called "Who Do You Trust?" aired on television. Edgar Bergen and then Johnny Carson hosted, so it was also a funny show. People participated as pairs, usually married couples. The premise of the show was that contestants had to choose who would answer the questions in order to win prizes. The challenge to them was, "Which of you feels confident with this category? Who do you trust?"

Consider how well you might do on such a show. Maybe you are playing that game already! Every day you answer the trust question.

I know that it is very important to me that people trust me, and I feel hurt when someone does not trust me. In those cases, I usually reason that the person does not know me. They need to find out that I am capable and true to my word. You deserve that same trust.

Where did we get the idea that we can't trust people? What makes you think you can't trust yourself? Get past those voices that are giving the negative perspective! This relates to the concept of "innocent until proven guilty." Your life can be so much easier if you begin thinking "trustworthy until proven otherwise."

Trust is wrapped up with honesty and quality. Do you believe, honor, and respect the other person? Do you have the confidence that they will follow through on their commitments with quality work? Do you give yourself this same level of trust? If you are concerned about errors, do you trust that you can remedy the situation if there are mistakes?

Great managers reject the notion that trust must be earned. Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman debunk that theory in their book, "First Break All the Rules: What Great Managers Do Differently." Here is what they said about the great managers in their study. "They know if, fundamentally, you don't trust people, there is no line, no point in time, beyond which people suddenly become trustworthy••• They believe that if you expect the best from people, then more often than not the best is what you get."

Begin with yourself. The wise philosopher Goethe said, "As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live."

Self-trust is the first secret of success.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

2. Coaching Assignment

a)

Consider something you would really like to be, have or do. Then complete this sentence - I don't trust myself to -

b)

List all the reasons you don't trust yourself for this particular situation.

c)

Now write down what would happen if you did trust yourself. Use your imagination!

d)

Take an action that demonstrates your trust in yourself.

e)

Repeat these steps with a variation. Insert someone else's name for "myself" and "yourself."

3. Career Tip - Starting a New Job

Congratulations! Your long search is over and you are ready to begin your new job. Ahhh•••• Now you can just relax. Right? Well, that depends on what you want.

We begin with a multiple-choice exercise. At the end of every day, review your experience and answer this item.

This job is:

a)

A good place for me to grow and develop for years

b)

An appropriate "launching pad" where I can learn and prepare to move on

c)

Not a good match for my skills and preferences

d)

Still a mystery to me

Any one of these choices can be the right answer! This continuous assessment will keep you fully conscious and ready to do whatever it takes to keep your career on track. Your answer may change from one day to the next. I would be very surprised if it didn't! The important thing is that you use this exercise to focus your energy so that you can benefit yourself and your employer, providing the best value you have to offer.

What else can you do?

  • Have a plan (and follow it) to get acquainted with your co-workers, customers, and others who are involved in the organization's business.

  • Study the past, present, and future of your job. Read materials on file and ask questions to find out how it was done previously and why. Inquire about changes.

  • Read the mission and vision statements of the organization. Keep them posted or stored where you can find them quickly.

  • Find out who has moved up in the organization and how they accomplished their success. Look for someone who can serve as your mentor.

  • Keep your supervisor informed about what you are doing and seek feedback. Maintain a log of the tasks you have started or completed so that you will have a handy reference.

  • Be patient with yourself. You have entered a new environment, and it takes time to become acclimated.

Before you leave work each day, ask yourself, "What have I learned today?" If you record your answers, this can make a very interesting resource for you. It will help you to see patterns, understand the culture, and track your progress. This journal can also help you formulate the right questions to ask and to see new directions you can pursue in the organization.

Congratulations on starting a new chapter in your life. Good luck!
