What's New in My World
My year is off to an exciting start! Since I decided to make fun a priority in my life, I focused on finding more opportunities to dance. This caused me to meet many wonderful people and explore various options during the past year. And voila! I am the development coordinator for a new chapter of USA Dance, a national ballroom dance organization. Our steering committee has worked passionately to get the chapter going, and our efforts paid off. More than one hundred dancers attended our first event in January! My work adventures parallel this experience with wonderful, successful collaborations. It's all about relationships!

1. Do You Want To Settle?

"It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it."

- Joseph Joubert

Do you want to settle? Watch out! This is a trick question. You may wish to heed the advice of Joseph Joubert before you give an answer.

I have chosen a useful word that has an interesting variety of meanings, one that we can interpret in either a positive or negative way. The idea of settling, no matter which definition we use, is crucial in the way we approach work and life.

The verb "settle" has 22 meanings! We will mention only a few.

On the positive side, one can reach a decision and settle something. If you have used a careful and thoughtful process, this type of settling can be a welcome relief. It can free you to focus your mind on other important concerns.

One of my favorite experiences is settling in to a new home, a new community, or a new job. This combines a skillful blend of adding your own personal touches with observing and adapting to your new surroundings. The result is healthy development for you and added value for your new community. And this type of settling often includes another meaning, "becoming calm or composed."

"Settling for" is the type of settling we need to avoid. The definition says, "to accept in spite of incomplete satisfaction." The example is: had to settle for a lower wage than the one requested. What is happening here? We are compromising our standards, our values, and our sense of worth.

You may be thinking that we can't always get what we want when we want it, and that is true. But if we allow this to become a pattern in our lives, the very essence of who we are starts to shrink. The journalist Maureen Dowd offers a warning about this type of settling,

"The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for."

It's possible that you have enjoyed stories and movies about people who were literally shrinking in size. However, if you consider this for yourself, it is not a pleasant prospect. To be constantly striving, developing, and growing is far more gratifying. This idea of new challenges and opportunities can get you moving faster and with more energy every day. And it will make a big difference to those whose lives you touch in the process.

Watch how you settle!

People wish to be settled. It is only as far as they are unsettled that there is any hope for them.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

2. Coaching Assignment

a)

Make a list of what you consider the main areas of your life: self, family, relationships, work, spiritual life, community involvement, etc.

b)

For each area, ask yourself whether you are at the level you wish to be. You may want to assign a score between one and ten to reflect your satisfaction.

c)

If any satisfaction score is less than you want it to be, describe how you think you are settling in that area.

d)

Write action steps you can take to change that "settling" and move toward satisfaction.

e)

Need help with this? Let me know and I will brainstorm with you.

f)

Enjoy your new sense of calm.
