Welcome!
Welcome and Happy New Year to all new and continuing subscribers! I hope that your 2005 is off to a great start.

"New" is certainly the theme for me, moving from New York to New Mexico. I arrived on January 3rd and started the long process of settling in - unpacking, arranging, purchasing necessary new items like furniture, etc. My lovely cat Sabrina did not particularly enjoy the trip to get here, but she seems to be adapting very well to her new home. There is plenty of sunshine for naptime!

1. Arches

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours."

- Henry David Thoreau

In my daily walks around the neighborhood in my New Mexico location, I have been especially intrigued by the architecture. Every day I can take a different route and see beautiful houses - with arches! That form is fascinating. To me it typifies beauty and orderliness. It also points upward to suggest reaching for the heavens.

Arches are everywhere it seems - framing windows, gates, and walls. They clarify the view and create orderly segments within spaces, inviting the visitor to come closer and explore. (Think of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the natural arches in the U.S., attracting thousands of tourists every year.) As I pondered the arches, I knew that there was plenty of inspiration within them. But how can we use this image?

Let's try this. Your dream is on the other side of the arch. From the mundane to the grandiose, we all have dreams waiting to be fulfilled. Begin by painting a picture in your mind's eye of what that will look like. This may take awhile for you to develop your vision, but keep imagining it and gradually adding the details. If you do this right, your vision will take you out of your comfort zone. Are you ready to step through the arch? Believe me, the triumphal march is worth it!

Meanwhile, in nearby Italy, Christopher Columbus was forming. As a youth, he spent many hours gazing out to sea and thinking to himself: "Someday I will be the cause of a holiday observed by millions of government workers." The fact that he thought in English was only one of the amazing things about the young Columbus. Another was his conviction that if he sailed all the way across the Atlantic, he would reach India. We now know, thanks to satellite photographs, that this makes him seem as stupid as a buffalo, although it sounded pretty good when Columbus explained it to the rulers of Spain, Ferdinand and his lovely wife, Imelda, who agreed to finance the voyage by selling six thousand pairs of her shoes.

2. Coaching Assignment

a)

Do you have a project or dream that has been eluding you? Write a description of its completion or fulfillment.

b)

Set aside quiet time when you can focus on your dream/project. Allow yourself to concentrate on this without any interruptions for about 30 minutes.

c)

With whatever artistic ability you possess, draw an image of yourself on the left side of a sheet of paper. Put a written description or a picture of your completed vision on the right side.

d)

Draw the most beautiful arch you can between the images.

e)

Post this work of art in a place where it can inspire you every day.

3. Interview Tip - Defining Your Purposes

Defining a purpose for an interview? To many people that may seem obvious. It's to get a job - right?

That's one purpose. However, you can have others. Please consider that to gain more from the experience you should clearly define what you want as results. Not every interview leads to a job, but that does not mean that your conversation was a failure.

Here are some additional benefits:

  • Practice at doing interviews

  • New information about an employer
  • Realistic preview of a profession
  • Valuable feedback from your interviewers
  • Insight about yourself and your performance in a potentially stressful situation
  • Ideas to help you prepare for the next interview

Every interview is a learning opportunity. Always debrief afterwards and use the knowledge you gain. Being invited to an interview makes you a winner. Practice to win bigger every time!
