1. Your Career Inspiration

An inspired career path stands out as the first component of the Block Five Breakthrough Awareness Technology©. An inspired career path is key to satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment from our work. But, how do we find that inspiration?

For some people it begins with a childhood role model. This could be someone in your local community or a 'star' in politics, TV, movies, or sports. You read everything you can about this person and watch them perform when you can. Perhaps you are impressed by the doctor who treats you for an injury or illness and become a doctor yourself. You may be thrilled by the performance of a musician or actor and pursue that path to the stage.

The inspiration that grabs you springs from your core values. These values are cultivated from experience with your family, your teachers, and others who teach and influence you. Whenever those values are reinforced, you gravitate toward the source of affirmation. You appreciate, respect, and admire a person who exemplifies those values.

Your own experience also provides inspiration. You know that it just feels good to solve that tough math problem or write a poem or rescue an injured animal. The attention, acceptance, and approval you receive from others when you achieve success in certain activities feed your inspiration. A future that promises those same rewards is very inviting.

Remember what you wanted to do when you were twelve years old? You may recognize most of the same values in yourself now. How are you doing at honoring those values? I hope your 'inner twelve-year-old' is proud of you!

"Dreams are renewable. No matter what our age or condition, there are still untapped possibilities within us and new beauty waiting to be born."

    - Dale E. Turner

2. Coaching Assignment

a)

Brainstorm a long list of what you value in life. Write from your mind and heart, and don't worry about editing.

b)

Choose the top 10 values from your list.

c)

Now rank each of those items according to their importance to you.

d)

On a scale of one (low) to ten (high), assign each value a satisfaction score. For example, if family ranks high on your list and you see very little of your family because of your work schedule, give that a lower score.

e)

Need help boosting your satisfaction scores? Let's talk. Please e-mail me at awatkin1@nycap.rr.com.

3. INTERVIEW TIP – The 'Overqualified' Dilemma

You may have experienced this situation already. Your job interview is going just fine, you think. Then the interviewer glances at your resume and looks at you with a puzzled expression, "Aren't you a bit overqualified for this position?"

Uh-oh - How should you respond? Before you utter the words, "I'll take anything, " think about the reasons for the question. Consider the expectations behind it and how you can allay the fears of your interviewer.

This employer may be afraid that you won't apply yourself seriously to your work because it is beneath your abilities. You need to change that impression quickly. Point out that you will still have the challenge of a new environment and culture. You will enjoy using your skills in this different setting and may be able to apply your previous learning in a unique way. Make it clear that you are motivated by the work itself, regardless of level.

Another fear is that you will leave after only a short time because you are not sufficiently challenged. There could be many factors that would keep you in the job, however. You take great pride in your work and are committed to following through once you start something. You are genuinely interested in this kind of work. You have confidence in your abilities and believe that eventually you will be promoted. Perhaps you have strong ties to the community or want to stay near your extended family. Whatever your reasons, be ready to articulate them when the situation arises. And in a tough economy, this scene will be played often!

Most important - be honest with yourself. Do you want this job? Consider your own fears and expectations as you go through the application process. Take time to think this through before accepting an offer for employment.
